(I won't be able to replace my TV until next year.) Two things struck me immediately, aside from the incredible detail, which beats the 1080i broadcasts that I am getting. The first was the colors. They are just dazzling! But it isn't because they're over-saturated or anything like that. It's like I'm seeing a variety of pastels that I've never seen before from my TV. So far I've looked mainly at nature films (like the complete Planet Earth) and I seem to be seeing a wider gamut of colors than I've ever seen before from my TV. I watched a regular DVD on it and the colors are "back to normal". So it is the high definition processing of the Denon that seems to be capturing the richness of the colors. The second thing I noticed is the quality of the sound. I've never heard such magnificent sound from my system. I thought it sounded great before (and others have remarked how wonderful my system sounds), but there is a noticeable improvement with this Denon, and that improvement is also noticeable on regular DVD's. This unit has already ruined it for me for watching regular DVD's and 480i broadcasts, and I OWN about 250 DVDs! I used to think that regular DVD's looked pretty good, but it is in reality the difference between night and day. I don't know how I'm going to be able to tolerate regular DVDs anymore. I've owned this player for nearly a year now and have watched a lot of the bugs get fixed through firmware. UPDATE: Decoding of DTS-HD HR (as of 1.115 firmware 11/24/08) is now included. Owners in forums were slow to pick up on this due to HR being the "forgotten codec." It decodes ALL now!!! The 3800 also does bitstream all codecs if you are so inclined. This player is really targeted to the analog crowd as it's got AL24 processing and great Burr Brown DAC's. If you own an HDMI capable receiver, then the purchase is more questionable as you are paying for an analog section you may never use. The Realta keeps the video reference quality so no need to keep the DVD player. Summary: Targeted to owners of non-HDMI receivers who want extensive bass management and listen to CD's and play both DVD's and BD's in one player. I suggest you purchase an extended warranty or get the Marantz BD8002 since it has 3 yr warranty and is a clone. Similar players: Sony BDP-S5000ES - a fine player but lacks the bass management that the 3800 has for the analog output (ie. fixed crossover). Pioneer Elite BD-09FD - another fine player but will not have DTS-HD MA decoding until future firmware. It is also rumored to have variable crossover through future firmware but the manual currently implies fixed crossover. I personally would never buy a product based on "future functionality." Marantz BD8002 - a clone of the Denon 3800 with a different power supply, faceplate, and Marantz's own upsampling instead of Denon's AL24. Otherwise almost everything is the same as the Denon. It's small, fairly good looking in a nondescript kind of way, is not riddled with buttons on the front panel, has Wifi and Netflix (nice combo) and a remote with an OK set of buttons. I used to own a Samsung DVD with HDD that had a very narrow field of reception, this is better but somewhat unresponsive. Sometimes you have to press a button three or four times before it reacts. Not OK. And it does not support subtitles for Netflix. Which is lame since it's a very new model released only months ago. Reminds me of Xbox 360: no subtitles support for playback from USB. Why? Bill knows. So, Mr. Toshiba boss; why no subtitles? Oh and the Wifi, while nice and built in and no problems connecting is very slow on the uptake. Start the device, sit around and wait for it to connect. Not like the Toshiba laptop I'm writing this on which connects super fast. But strangest of all, I leave it on in Netflix menu, screensaver kicks in. Then it goes into sleep mode. When I wake it from sleep mode I can't get picture from it. The TV finds the signal but the picture is all black. I have to pull the cord and reconnect it before getting picture again. Bottom line is it plays Blu-Ray and DVD disks fine, but the problem with my unit is when you pause the disk for more than a few minutes. Once the screensaver takes control, the unit is basically dead with the only option to go back to the Toshiba menu. You can't un-pause, you can't resume from where you left off, the only buttons that work is "Stop" which is a full stop with the machine forgetting where you were, and "top menu" which takes you back to the Toshiba menu letting you start the disk over. Either way, you are heading into the chapter selector and finding where you left off and re-watching at least some of the movie. The most attractive feature has to be the price tag. Within the first hour I had it hooked up to my home theater system, connected to my wi-fi network, updated the firmware over the web, connected to Netflix, and connected to Pandora. At that point I was ready to log in to Amazon and post a 5 star review. I am glad that I held off because there have been a few problems, but not enough to make me want to return the player. Even though I have the latest firmware, 1009.1, Vudu does not work for me. I get an error message when I try to start it (I will post the error here tomorrow; right now I am watching a movie!). I was able to set my location in Accuweather and change it from Celsius to Fahrenheit. However, when I went back into Accuweather the location was correct but it reverted back to Celsius. I went in and out of it several times and set it back to Fahrenheit but each time it would go back to Celsius. I went to the Vudu site and did some searches on Samsung, but could not find anything helpful. I also did some Google searches without much luck. The most useful information always pointed back to the Amazon reviews for this product. I played a regular DVD and it did an OK job although it seemed a little over-exposed. Took a chance on this Samsung and ordered it without a lot of information availabe because it is so new but glad I did. Just got it out of the box today and everything works great. Easily set up the wireless to my home network (and it saved the IP address and encryption key info so I do not need to sign on each time). There are few units (if any) with all the features this unit offers at this price. This unit offers solid access to You Tube, various videos on demand services, Pandora (love Pandora!), and it sees all my videos and photos on my computer in multiple ways (with their Samsung PC Share Manager and direct acess) all through the network. The pics load a little slow, but the files are big. Pretty sure if I reduce them down access will speed up. Decent You Tube search feature (for a TV remote as a typing device). Easily found my own You Tube videos. In any case, all locked in solid with minimal hassle. I would give it 5 stars except there is still a learning curve on managing my PC folders and I am still getting the hang of some Samsungs apps, but I am confident it will all work out. I initially entered the encyption key incorrectly and did not get a password error but instead it just said the IP address was wrong. A restart with the right key resolved all. The first HD video I played was a home video made on my Canon HD Vixia HF200 consumer video camera and it looked absolutely great. For a first view, this player is excellent.
