The picture is good. It works well. I can hook it up to different things that are analog. AND the optical cable is not to be found! this unit requires a different kind of optical cable, NOT a regular (Toslink) one. And Sony doesn't sell it on their website. First thing I thought was she did not get the model I wanted. She is usually what I call electronically challenged. But I hooked it up to give it a try anyway. Easy set up, works well. Down load time is only about 30 seconds. Played and operated very well. Picture and sound was very nice. I am going to keep this unit. Works just fine at a good price. Oh and you get a HDMI cable as well. Over all a good unit and a good price. My wife did well. Reviews for Sony BDP-BX1 Blu-Ray Disc Player Upscaling (Electronics) First off, this IS the same player as the BDP-S350 however the remote included is a backlit remote that I believe is included with the BDP-S550 player. This BDP-BX1 also comes with a decent HDMI cable. Based on my research, Sony creates these different models at the request of the Big Box stores (BB, CC, etc...) to prevent shoppers from requesting they price match Costco, sam's Club, etc... On to the Player: This unit is profile 2.0 compliant. Blue ray discs load fairly quickly but the slight delay over standard DVD's takes a bit of getting used to. This is an inharent problem on any Blue-Ray player due to the sometimes heavy Java interface used for its menu structures. BD Live will require a USB memory stick to be inserted into the back of the player. I would suggest getting a 1 or 2 GB memory stick and just leave it there (not sure why Sony wouldn't include internal memory?). These memory devices are VERY economical at this point so this is no big deal. Be cautious when purchasing a memory stick though, many may not fit due to it's recession into the case a bit. I've read that the Kingstons work well. Firmware updates are VERY easy; a "technologically challenged" person will have little or no problems updating the firmware if it becomes necessary. I use the HDMI interface through my Denon 1909 receiver to my Pioneer plasma and the image quality is breathtaking; although this is expected from any Blue ray player. The Memorex did an okay job of playing movies, but the startup time was MISERABLE and the menu system was extremely unresponsive and frustrating. Plus, the firmware update process was atrocious--I wasted seven CD-Rs trying to update it, before getting lucky and finding a way to get the player to accept the disc. Anyway, I finally cut my losses, sold the Memorex, and replaced the player with this one instead. What a difference. This player boots up in the same amount of time as a typical DVD player--about five seconds from pressing eject to seeing the tray fully opened. It has a simple, intuitive menu system based on the PS3's XMB system. Discs load up fast--the speeds are almost as good as PS3, the undisputed king of fast loading times. Picture and sound quality is, of course, excellent--it's a Sony, you really should expect no less from the inventors of the Blu-ray format :) Really, there's nothing to complain about. Given the small price difference between the Memorex model and this one, I don't know why I waited this long to switch. The only quibble I can think of is that you can't use a USB flash drive to update the firmware--you need to burn a CD-R. Not a big deal, especially since you can do it via the network if you can run Ethernet from your router/modem to the Blu-ray player, or don't mind spending a few extra bucks for a wireless router in your entertainment center. Anyway, this is apparently the same thing as a Sony BDP-S350 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player except for slightly less fancy audio decoding, and a backlit remote. I wouldn't sweat the audio decoding thing--if you have a sound system good enough to hear the difference, you'll be able to decode the HD formats in the receiver itself. And the backlit remote is cool. So buy either one and enjoy it. Or, go the extra mile and get a PlayStation 3 80GB if money is no object. The most attractive feature has to be the price tag. I received this Toshiba BluRay model BDX3000KU when I ordered my Toshiba 55WX800U 3D HDTV around the first of December. Also received two pair of Tosiba 3D glasses as part of this package. First OF ALL, I cannot say enough good things about ordering from Amazon.com. I got a terrific deal! I had shopped locally, in Nashville and online for several months. The TV is wonderful! HOWEVER, after hooking up the DVD, it would not turn on. It would only stay on standby. No luck with the DVD remote, the TV remote or manually. I contacted Amazon.com customer FYI! Again the same problem when I attempted to turn on the unit the following day. I tried everything and nothing worked until I unplugged the unit electrical cord and plugged it in again. In reading the owner's manual I learned this allowed the unit to RESET. It worked beautifully and would turn on the remainder of the day. BUT, ANOTHER HOWEVER! When I tried to turn on the unit this morning after it setting overnight, it would not turn on. I again unplugged the unit, waited several seconds for it to reset and AGAIN it then turned on. At this point I called Toshib a customer service and spoke to Don. Don put me on hold and researched the problem. Per Don, this is a "KNOWN PROBLEM" for this model by Toshiba and is called a "POWER FREEZE". Toshiba is seeking a resolution to this problem with this model. Per Don and Linda, who I spoke to when I called Toshiba a second time to clarify, Toshiba will call me at my home phone when the resolutiion found. I was not given a time-frame for a return call as it is not known when a resolution will be found. I SPECIFICALLY asked both persons whether I should return this unit to Amazon.com a second time and purchase a different model as I really like the feathures of and the functioning of this model except for waiting for a resolution of the "POWER FREEZE" problem. Both assurd me I need not do this. THEREFORE, I am keeping this BDX3000KU unit expecting Toshiba to call with a resolution to the problem or offering me another unit. I am mailing the registration card tomorrow. I am glad as I did not wish to bother Amazon.com again, expecially as this is a problem with this particular Toshiba model and Toshiba is seeking a resolution. I suspected as much when the same problem occurred with the second unit received. LET ME RESTATE this not an Amazon.com problem. I have had nothing but amazing service doing business with Amazon.com at this time. I WILL attempt to contact Amazon. Image quality is also still great. Changing from 2 stars to 4 Player came bundled with my 3D TV. Nearly every time i want to use the player I have to physically unplug it and plug it back in to even get it to respond! It constantly is freezing and crashing! When the player actually works, it produces great images, absolutely top-quality. This is the only reason I'm giving this player 2 stars. hopefully a firmware update fixes the player in the near future, if so I would give it 4.5 stars. This is a very poorly designed 3D blu ray player. The software of this player is in such bad state that if you try and tweak around a little, it will freeze on you. And once frozen nothing will work. (As other reviewers have also stated, not even the power button.) The only way out is to unplug the unit. The freezing issue is so frequent that it makes this unit almost useless. Lets me give you a brief on what my take on this blu ray 3D capable player is: Remote: (UPDATE Jan 5th, 2011: Forgot to mention before, no backlight on the remote as well. Another thing I have noticed is that the remote has a very short range and sensitivity is poor.) Little confusing with the menu button. Too many of those are present and you have to kind of remember which one will do what. Apart from that there is no mute button on the remote. Everything else looks fine and easy to use. But again if the unit freezes you have to jump out of you cozy couch and unplug the unit as the remote won't work in that scenario. Playback: (UPDATE Jan 5th, 2011: Didn't encounter playback freezing after that one incident. But 8 out of 10 times the player won't come back from standby. I have to keep unplugging the power cord to get it started.) Yes, it will play your DVDs, Blu-ray etc very nicely and won't freeze during playback. The only freezing issue I faced during playback was after pressing the rewind button while a DVD was playing. (Although, this only happened once out of may be 10-12 times I pressed the rewind button and other buttons during playback.) WiFi: This player has a built in WiFi which is nice. There are a number of players that will play your NetFlix streaming movies but this is not one of them it will play DivX which is a purchase the titles as you go company. This was my fault as I did not read the specifications closely enough. If a Blue Ray player will play NetFlix titles it will specifically say so. Otherwise this has been a very good player as far as I can tell and internet hook up and downloading the first firmware upgrade was easy. Some titles take longer to load than others. Standard DVDs look better than on my old DVD player. Sound on Blue Ray through my amp is wonderful. PS: If I am wrong on the NetFlix issue and someone out there has been able to use this player to access their NetFlix account and play streaming movies I would love to know about it. I was watching Planet Earth and suddenly the picture froze. After a while, it skipped to the next scene and there was no voice. After forwarding for sometime, Voice came back. The freezing issues happened while watching the movie X-Men too. I tried playing the HD videos recorded on my Sony camcorder and got an error message that the Format is not supported. I tried playing it both by copying the recorded clips on to a DVD and on to a SD Card. Also, tried playing a clip that I downloaded from the internet with no luck. Also, the device does not play Video CDs. I have a few of the old ones and I don't want to have two players, one to play certain type of files and other for the rest. I tried the above after upgrading to the latest firmware. (Upgrade was a breeze) I will wait for Philips to fix the issues before I buy the player.
